Dutch Trappist Beer
Dutch Trappist Beer
La Trappe - Abbey “Onze Lieve Vrouw van Koningshoeven. The only Trappist beer found outside Belgium. The abbey opened a brewery inside the monastery in 1884. The monks ran the brewery production until 1999 when, under a commercial agreement, the production continued under the commercial brewer “Bavaria”. This led to a dispute over the term “trappist beer” and the term was withdrawn from the label. In 2005 after lengthy legal discussions and a review, the monks once again took over the brewing and the “Trappist beer” logo and name was restored.
La Trappe Blond - 6.5% A lightly spiced pale golden beer
La Trappe Dubbel - 7.0% A dark well-bodied, rich tasting ale
La Trappe Tripel - 8.0% Dark full-bodied beer with a toffee, chocolaty spiced flavour
La Trappe Quadruple - 10.0% Dark amber beer with a sweet fruit and malt taste - an excellent "after-dinner" drink!
Other beers are produced by the abbey but not on a large commercial scale, although occasionally these beers find their way out of Holland.
What is Trappist Beer?
Trappist Beer is only given this name if it satisfies a number of strict criteria
1. The beer is brewed within the walls of a Trappist abbey, by the monks themselves or under their supervision.
2. The brewery must be controlled by the monastery and have a business culture compatible with the monastic project.
3. The purpose of the brewery is not to make a profit. The income takes care of the livelihood of the monks and the upkeep of the abbey site. What is left over is used for charitable purposes, social work and people in need.
